Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how CiteKeep Student ("CiteKeep," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the CiteKeep website, create an account, save records, create share links, manage billing, or use the CiteKeep Chrome extension.
This Privacy Policy applies solely to information collected through CiteKeep Student and the CiteKeep Chrome extension. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, you should not use the Services. If you have questions about this Privacy Policy, you may contact us at hello@citekeep.com.
Information Collection, Use, and Sharing
We collect information that you voluntarily provide to us, information collected through your use of the Services, and information necessary to operate account, billing, sharing, and browser-extension features.
The personal information we may collect includes your email address, account and authentication information, saved record content, reflections, summaries, critiques, sources, tags, URLs, timestamps, platform and model information when available, billing and subscription information, communications you send to us, and information related to records or share links you choose to create.
When you use the Chrome extension, we may also collect information needed to provide extension functionality, such as saved drafts, pending uploads, session-related information, queue data, and extension settings stored locally in your browser. If you use the optional screenshot feature, screenshots are saved locally to your device and are not uploaded to CiteKeep.
- Records are private by default unless you intentionally create and enable a share link.
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
- We do not use captured record content for advertising.
How We Collect Information
We collect information directly from you when you create an account, sign in, save records, add reflections or other disclosure details, manage billing, contact us, or otherwise submit information through the Services.
We also collect information through your use of the Services. For example, the Chrome extension may read content from supported AI chat pages only when you click the save or capture control to capture a record, or from the active page when you deliberately trigger a manual capture. We may also receive browser, device, session, or usage information needed to operate the Services and keep you signed in.
When you use share links, billing features, or account management features, we collect the information needed to provide those functions. Some information may also be stored locally in your browser so the extension can preserve drafts, settings, and pending actions between sessions.
CiteKeep does not collect passive browsing history. Page content is captured only when you deliberately use a capture or save control.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to provide and administer the Services, create and maintain your account, authenticate you, save and organize records, support assignment and disclosure workflows, generate citations and share links, manage subscriptions, process billing-related actions, and respond to inquiries or support requests.
We may also use information to maintain product reliability, troubleshoot problems, protect the Services, detect abuse or misuse, enforce plan limits, comply with law, and send you service-related notices such as account, security, password reset, billing, or policy-related messages.
Sharing With Third Parties
We may share information with third parties only as necessary to operate the Services, fulfill your requests, or comply with legal obligations. These third parties may include payment processors, authentication and data-storage providers, hosting and infrastructure providers, browser or extension distribution platforms, and other service providers that help us operate CiteKeep.
We may also share information with people you intentionally share with through CiteKeep features. If you create a share link, the content and settings associated with that share may be visible to anyone who has the link, subject to the disclosure options you selected.
We may disclose information if required to do so by law, court order, legal process, or a valid governmental request, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect rights, safety, security, or the integrity of the Services.
CiteKeep does not send captured record content to supported AI chat providers as part of the CiteKeep save flow. The extension reads content from supported pages only when you choose to capture and save that content to CiteKeep.
- Categories of recipients may include payment processors, authentication and database service providers, cloud hosting providers, browser and extension distribution platforms, public share-link recipients, and legal or regulatory authorities when required.
Your Access to and Control Over Information
You may review, update, or delete certain information through your account settings and normal use of the Services. You may delete saved records, disable share links, or delete your account through CiteKeep features where available.
If you want to know what information we have about you, correct information, request deletion, or raise a concern about how your information is used, you may contact us at hello@citekeep.com. We will review and respond in accordance with applicable law and our operational requirements.
Extension-local drafts, settings, and related locally stored data may also be cleared by removing the extension, clearing browser storage, or overwriting those values through normal use.
Data Retention
We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Services, maintain your account, support records and share links you choose to keep active, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.
Saved records generally remain in your account until you delete them or delete your account. Share links remain active until you disable the share, delete the underlying content, or delete your account. Some billing, operational, legal, and security records may be retained for a longer period when necessary.
Locally stored extension data may remain in your browser until it is cleared, overwritten, or removed with the extension.
Security
We take reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the internet and no method of storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
CiteKeep does not routinely read user content. Access to user data may occur only when necessary to operate the Services, respond to support requests, investigate security or abuse issues, comply with law, or otherwise address situations where access is legally required or operationally unavoidable.
Children and Student Use
CiteKeep Student is intended for academic and educational workflows. Users should only save or share information they are permitted to disclose.
If you are a student, minor, or otherwise subject to school, instructor, parent, or guardian requirements, you are responsible for making sure your use of the Services is permitted in your educational setting.
This version of CiteKeep is not intended for children under 13, and we do not currently offer a child-directed or COPPA consent workflow in the product.
Updates
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any updates will be posted on this page, and the Last updated date will be revised when changes are made.
